Q. What are the benefits of CastleLite Pavers?
A. One of the many benefits of CastleLite is in the method in which we manufacture our pavers. We using a single mold process that enables the color to be integrated throughout the paver. The color you see on the surface is the same color throughout the paver. This enhances the color of the pavers for years to come.
Q. Why should I choose pavers over asphalt or concrete?
A. The ground under asphalt and concrete will move over time, which causes cracking and displacement. Concrete pavers are modular and flexible, so it will not crack over time. If the ground does heave or a utility needs to be repaired under the pavers, they can be removed in whole and replaced after the repairs have been made.
Q. Can pavers be laid over the top of my existing asphalt or concrete?
A. Pavers can be laid over existing pavements that are in good condition. If the pavement shows signs of major cracking, heaving, or settling, we do not recommend placing pavers over these conditions. We recommend that you remove the existing pavement, treat the substrate and construct a new structural section beneath the concrete pavers.
Q. How do the pavers interlock?
A. All of CastleLiteʼs concrete pavers are interlocking. Regardless of which shape, color or laying pattern you choose, they are ALL interlocking concrete pavers. The term “interlock” is used to describe the internal friction imposed by the joint sand between the concrete pavers. It is this interlocking feature that give concrete pavers the flexibility and durability to withstand minor and major movements of the native soils. Maintenance and repairs (if required) are simplified because no mortar is used in the installation process.
Q. Are concrete pavers slippery?
A. No, CastleLite concrete pavers have been tested and are known to exceed the Caltrans standards for friction coefficient (skid and slip resistance) for highway construction. Concrete pavers are also known to surpass the slip and skid resistance standards established by the American Disabilities Act.
Q. What type of sand should I use under the concrete pavers?
A. We recommend using a hard, course, angular washed sand. This is typically referred to as “washed concrete sand”. This type of sand will drain water well and will not deteriorate over time. DO NOT use rounded/fine sands, decomposed granite, stone dust or limestone screenings.
Q. What type of sand should I use between my concrete pavers?
A. We recommend an angular washed sand with sand grains between a No. 10 and No. 30 sieve. The use of angular sand will bind together during the compaction process. The problem with using a very fine sand is it will wash out easily and will cause an interlock failure.
Q. Will weeds and grass grow between the paver joints?
A. If you installed your concrete pavers with the recommended materials and methods, you will have created a sterile environment that will not allow weeds or grass to grow between the pavers. Seeds can blow into the top of the paver joints and weeds or grass can start growing in any organic material that has built up in the joints. In the event that this happens, you can pull the weeds as normally or apply a weed killer spray.
Q. How can I replace a concrete paver?
A. One of the major advantages of using concrete pavers, is the ability to remove individual pavers. To simply remove an individual paver, you need to remove the sand from around the paver edges. Using two flat headed screwdrivers, gently wedge them into the joints of the pavers and rock the paver back and forth. You will be able to lift the paver out with the screwdriver.
